RAF Brize Norton runway upgrade project
RAF Brize Norton Aircraft Operating Surfaces (AOS) upgrade, is being delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
Project overview
VolkerFitzpatrick is delivering the RAF Brize Norton runway upgrade, a major aviation infrastructure project to refurbish the aircraft operating surfaces at the UK’s primary military air transport hub. Delivered on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the project includes extensive airfield resurfacing works designed to enhance operational performance, resilience and long-term asset life.
Scope of works
The RAF Brize Norton project centres on the upgrade of critical aircraft operating surfaces (AOS), including the runway, taxiways and associated infrastructure. These improvements are essential to maintaining safe and efficient operations at the Royal Air Force’s largest station and primary strategic air transport hub. RAF Brize Norton is the Royal Air Force’s primary strategic air transport hub, playing a critical role in supporting the UK’s global operations and rapid response capability.
Engineering and delivery
Delivered in collaboration with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) - GOV.UK , AECOM and key supply chain partners, the project reflects a highly integrated approach to complex aviation engineering.
A significant milestone has been achieved with the installation and commissioning of on-site asphalt plants, representing a major step forward in delivering the RAF Brize Norton runway upgrade. By producing high-specification asphalt directly at the airfield — supported by approximately 70,000 tonnes of aggregate stock — the programme strengthens supply chain resilience, improves quality control and minimises disruption to ongoing flight operations.
Main construction is now underway, with delivery continuing through to 2027, marking the next phase in enhancing this critical UK aviation asset.
