Working in partnership with Mott MacDonald and designed by Associated Architects on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority, the £56m redevelopment has transformed one of the region’s busiest transport interchanges. It has significantly improved capacity, accessibility and the overall passenger experience at a station originally built for around 500,000 passengers per year but now serving millions.

A key focus of the project was inclusive, step-free access, with features such as lifts, clear wayfinding, level access routes and a dedicated changing places facility embedded into the design from the outset.

The scheme also strengthens connections across the area, including a new pedestrian footbridge linking the University of Birmingham to the canal towpath, improved cycle and bus interchange facilities, and enhanced public realm.

Importantly, the station remained operational throughout construction, demonstrating careful planning and collaboration across 13 organisations involved in delivery.
