Installation of switches and crossings at Radlett Rail Freight Interchange

VolkerFitzpatrick achieves latest milestone at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett

VolkerFitzpatrick has marked a further milestone in the delivery of the SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett, with the installation of the first new Switches and Crossings (S&C) unit on the scheme.

Installing rail infrastructure at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett

The S&C installation at the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) is a critical element of the project, enabling trains to transfer between lines and forming part of the new rail connection between the Midland Main Line and the future freight terminal. This infrastructure will play a key role in increasing rail freight capacity while supporting the shift away from road-based logistics.

The milestone builds on the successful completion of a major underpass beneath the Midland Main Line in late 2024, a significant engineering achievement that now allows the two-road rail line to pass into the new terminal area. The underpass is fundamental to unlocking the wider development, which will include seven distribution units, the largest extending to approximately 1.2 million sq ft.

Since 2024, VolkerFitzpatrick has been delivering the £72 million rail contract on behalf of SEGRO, incorporating overhead line equipment works, lineside civils, signalling and the installation of further S&C units.

The programme continues to progress in line with key milestones, supported by close collaboration between SEGRO plc, Network Rail and project stakeholders.

In parallel with construction, VolkerFitzpatrick has remained committed to minimising impact on the local community and protecting the surrounding environment. This has included the careful relocation of more than 2,500 great crested newts, with plans for their return once works are complete.

Once complete, the Radlett SRFI will provide a state-of-the-art, rail-connected logistics hub designed to reduce congestion on the UK’s roads, lower carbon emissions and strengthen the resilience of the national supply chain.
