RAF Brize Norton Airfield Upgrade Passes 42,250m³ Breakout Milestone
VolkerFitzpatrick has reached a significant milestone on the £180 million RAF Brize Norton airfield upgrade, successfully breaking out more than 42,250m³ of material as work progresses on the Royal Air Force's principal air mobility hub.
The project forms part of a major programme of improvements designed to enhance the airfield's long-term operational capability, safety and resilience. VolkerFitzpatrick is delivering the full replacement of the three-kilometre runway, alongside upgrades to airfield lighting and drainage infrastructure.
Over the past three weeks, approximately 500 personnel have been working across the airfield, supported by a wide range of specialist plant and equipment. Through careful planning and collaborative working, the team has achieved rapid progress, with more than 80% of the existing runway surface now removed.
The breakout of more than 42,250m³ of material marks a significant milestone in the project, paving the way for the next phase of runway reconstruction. In line with VolkerFitzpatrick's commitment to sustainable delivery, much of the material removed will be reused within the new runway, helping to minimise waste and reduce the project's environmental impact.
