VolkerFitzpatrick begins £180 million RAF Brize Norton airfield upgrade
Major infrastructure programme will enhance operational capability and improve resilience at the UK’s busiest military air base.
VolkerFitzpatrick has commenced work on a major £180 million infrastructure programme at RAF Brize Norton, delivering critical upgrades that will support the long-term operational capability, safety and resilience of the Royal Air Force’s principal air mobility hub.
The RAF project, delivered in conjunction with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), will see the existing runway replaced alongside significant refurbishment work across the wider airfield infrastructure. The project forms part of the newly-announced Defence Investment Plan, which commits investment into the refurbishment of major runways and the renewal of critical infrastructure across the Defence estate.
Under the contract, VolkerFitzpatrick will undertake the full replacement of the air station’s 3km runway, alongside extensive refurbishment of taxiways and associated infrastructure. The works will also include upgrades to airfield lighting systems, drainage improvements and enhancements to supporting infrastructure across the site.
The programme represents a significant investment in the future of RAF Brize Norton and will help ensure the airfield remains capable of supporting vital Defence operations both in the UK and overseas. Approximately 350,000 tonnes of material will be used during construction – equivalent to the weight of around 29,000 double-decker buses.
“VolkerFitzpatrick is proud to support the AOS programme at RAF Brize Norton, where strong collaboration has driven safety, communication, and performance across a complex scheme. “With main works underway, early planning has positioned the team for successful delivery through to 2027. We remain committed to working in partnership to deliver infrastructure that enhances operational capability at RAF Brize Norton."

In addition to its operational benefits, the project will deliver lasting social value to the surrounding community. VolkerFitzpatrick will create 20 local employment opportunities, including five apprenticeships, and provide 30 weeks of work experience for local candidates. The project team will also prioritise suppliers within a 50-mile radius of RAF Brize Norton, helping to support regional businesses throughout construction.
John Crennell, Deputy Head Air Infrastructure Major Programmes said: “This is a critical programme to renew and modernise the infrastructure that underpins operations at RAF Brize Norton. We’ve moved from design into delivery, and work is now underway to replace the runway and upgrade key airfield systems in a carefully phased way.
“While there will be a planned runway closure later this year, we’ve worked closely with the RAF to ensure operations continue seamlessly from across the UK. Once complete, the upgraded airfield will provide a safer, more resilient platform to support Defence activity at home and overseas.”
AECOM is acting as Technical Services Provider for the programme.
Separately, further investment is also being made at RAF Brize Norton, with construction underway on 265 new military family homes as part of the Defence Housing Strategy and the Government’s commitment to improving access to quality accommodation for service personnel and their families.
