Kingston Cromwell Bus Station
VolkerFitzpatrick has transformed the existing thirty-year-old station into a modern, multi-use facility incorporating state-of-the-art, energy efficient technology.
The team not only improved accessibility and safety but ensured the station is now better equipped to handle increased passenger numbers and significantly enhances both passenger and staff experiences. Originally opened in the 1990s, the newly completed Kingston bus station now meets the growing needs of the local community.
The team demolished the old station and constructed a new multi-use retail buildings, alongside upgraded staff and passenger facilities. The station now features improved high- and low-level lighting, fully accessible bus stops, and a new low-level canopy made of Corten Rusticated steel work supported by concrete Foundations, which provides a sheltered waiting environment for passengers and pedestrians. The wider passenger island provides more space for customers waiting for buses and moving around the station. Additionally, the station includes fully accessible toilets, two new retail spaces, and enhanced accommodation for TfL staff and bus drivers.
Sustainability
Kingston Bus Station also has an array of sustainable features. These include, a green canopy edge and planters, newly resurfaced pavements with improved drainage (including a sustainable urban drainage (SUDS) system), and solar panels. The station also benefits from improved LED lighting, CCTV, and a new PA system.
Social Value
During our project in Kingston, we focused on delivering social value through various initiatives for the local community. We dedicated 20 staff days to educational engagement, exceeding our goal of 5 days, by collaborating with local schools and charities in deprived areas.
Key activities included career insight sessions for students at Kingston College and Holyfield Secondary School, aimed at inspiring future construction professionals. We also partnered with subcontractors to raise £1,000 for Demelza Children’s Charity and provided plumbing services to Voice of Hope, a charity supporting mental health and domestic violence survivors. Additionally, we raised £250 at their charity gala.
In workforce development, we supported two apprentices, one of whom completed their apprenticeship, and prioritized local hiring. We invested over one million pounds in Kingston and London-based SMEs, ensuring our project benefits both the community and the local economy.
"A big thank you on behalf of Transport for London to Volkerfitzpatrick for their hard work and commitment to bringing the new Kingston Cromwell Road Bus Station to life. The project teams collaborative and proactive efforts will significantly improve the travel experience for thousands of commuters for many years to come.”
