VolkerFitzpatrick embarks on vital stabilisation works at Edenbridge Embankment
VolkerFitzpatrick, in collaboration with Network Rail and as part of the Southern Renewals Enterprise, has launched a critical programme of stabilisation works along the Edenbridge embankment in Kent.

These essential upgrades are designed to enhance the long-term resilience of the Redhill to Tonbridge railway line, which will be closed for nine days in August 2025 to facilitate the works.
Located east of the River Eden, the embankment is particularly prone to landslides due to complex ground conditions. VolkerFitzpatrick mobilised to site in April 2025, with engineering works commencing in June. The project builds on previous interventions and targets untreated sections of the slope that continue to show signs of instability.
Engineering a resilient future
As part of a proactive and comprehensive approach to embankment resilience, VolkerFitzpatrick will deliver a robust package of engineering measures, including:
- 360 metres of sheet pile walls installed on both sides of the track at the toe of the slope
- 226 soil nails, each 9 metres long, installed in areas with restricted access
These interventions form part of a long-term strategy to ensure the safety and reliability of this key rail corridor.
Delivering sustainable infrastructure
This programme reflects VolkerFitzpatrick’s commitment to delivering safe, sustainable infrastructure across the UK rail network. The Edenbridge works are part of a broader collaboration with Network Rail under the Southern Renewals Enterprise, focused on renewing and future-proofing critical railway assets. By undertaking these works during a concentrated nine-day closure in August, the project team will minimise disruption to passengers while maximising the efficiency of delivery.
