VolkerFitzpatrick Celebrates Major Milestone as New Footbridge Installed at Kings Heath Station

Construction on the new Kings Heath railway station reached a significant milestone this weekend as VolkerFitzpatrick successfully installed a new pedestrian footbridge in a complex overnight operation.

The pre-fabricated structure was carefully craned into place during the night of Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 June, marking a key step forward in the multi-million-pound development of three new stations on the Camp Hill Line in south Birmingham. The precision and scale of the engineering feat were captured in a video.

The footbridge will enable future passengers to safely change platforms at Kings Heath and is a vital component of the wider programme to restore passenger services to the Camp Hill Line for the first time since the Second World War. The project includes the construction of new stations at Moseley Village, Kings Heath, and Pineapple Road.

This transformative programme is being delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick on behalf of TfWM, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), and the West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE), in partnership with Network Rail and West Midlands Railway.

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said:
"This milestone demonstrates how we are now making rapid progress on the construction of these stations as we work towards getting them finished and open to passengers. They will have a huge impact on the people here, giving them a fast, reliable, and affordable alternative to the traffic queues on the Alcester Road – making it easier to get to work or college while encouraging more people to visit and see what Moseley, Kings Heath, and Stirchley have to offer."

"The successful overnight installation of this footbridge is a testament to the collaborative efforts and expertise of our team. Logistically, lifting such a large structure into position within a tight overnight window requires meticulous planning, precise execution, and robust safety protocols. “We are incredibly proud of this achievement, and it underscores our commitment to delivering these vital new stations to the highest standards, benefiting the West Midlands for decades to come."

Anne Shaw, Executive Director of Transport for West Midlands, added: "Seeing the footbridge being lifted into place highlights how close we are to getting these stations finished. This footbridge is crucial for ensuring pedestrian safety and its installation brings us significantly closer to restoring passenger services to the Camp Hill Line – this will be a game-changer for these communities."

Once complete, the new stations will offer residents in south Birmingham a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to car travel, easing congestion on the busy Alcester Road, reducing pollution, and improving air quality. Journey times into Birmingham New Street are expected to be just 10–15 minutes.
