VolkerFitzpatrick inspires the next generation of female engineers

VolkerFitzpatrick staff at the Intercity Express train depot site being constructed at Doncaster Carr helped mark National Women in Engineering Day yesterday with a fun and informative event.

The site opened its doors to 27 female students along with seven teachers and Cllr Bill Mordue, Doncaster Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Business, Skills, Tourism and Culture. The event was organised to celebrate the work that women do in engineering and showcase the careers available to women in engineering.

During their time on site, the group received a guided tour of the project as well as an informative talk by experienced engineer, Sarah Quigley who gave an interesting insight into her work and her route into engineering.

The event concluded with the budding engineers receiving a demonstration of some real life equipment used on site and after some training, being able to try it for themselves.

Speaking after the event the students and teachers were full of praise for their experience on site:

Zoe Ogden a Year 10 student at Balby Carr Community Academy said: “I didn’t really understand engineering until I came to The Women in Engineering Event today. It really opened my eyes to different opportunities within the industry”.

Emily Adams, Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering at Doncaster College added: “What a wonderful opportunity to be invited to a live site and engage with experienced engineers”

Commenting on the event Gill Fry, VolkerFitzpatrick’s project skills manager for the intercity express depot projects said: “We are delighted to welcome these young ladies to Doncaster Carr and help show them the wonderful careers available to women in the engineering industry.

It is lovely to see the high interest we received from the group during the event and their excitement in getting involved in the demonstrations. I hope this has given them an insight into what it is like to work on a live site as an engineer. “
