Southwark integrated waste management facility

Southwark London

All waste collected in Southwark will pass through this award winning integrated waste management facility, diverting waste away from landfill, ensuring the Borough achieves its aim of recycling 50% of the 118,000T/annum of waste generated and meeting EU landfill directives. Stakeholders, including residents, also gain environmental and financial benefits by processing waste and recycling as close to source as possible.

Scope

Veolia Environmental Services (VES) was granted planning permission to build the Integrated Waste Management Facility in February 2010 as part of a 25-year PFI contract with Southwark Council.  VolkerFitzpatrick was appointed by Veolia as their construction contractor.

VolkerFitzpatrick delivered the construction works for this new facility including the ground remediation works, site preparation, access roads, drainage and landscaping works.  A sensitive and ecological approach was taken to the landscaping with the installation of stag beetle loggeries, bat and bird boxes and green roofs with sedum matting for insects.

The centre consists of a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Household Waste Reuse and Recycling Centre (HWRRC) and Recycle Discovery Centre (RDC) for schools and community groups to visit. The MBT facility will treat up to 87,500T/annum of household waste, using mechanical and biological processes.

This project won the LetsRecycle.com Award for Excellence in the category of Innovation in Design of a Waste Management Facility, and the Considerate Constructors Silver Award in 2011 and 2012.

The facility has high sustainability credentials, with a BREEAM ‘excellent' rating targeted for its Resource Centre and a BREEAM ‘ very good' rating for its waste processing buildings.
