Refurbishment of Oak Farm and Harlington Libraries

VolkerFitzpatrick were appointed by the London Borough of Hillingdon to complete the final two projects in the authority’s 15 site library improvement programme at Oak Farm and Harlington Libraries.

The project involved transforming the existing 1970s Oak Farm Library into a state-of-the-art community learning facility. Works involved the partial demolition of the building and removal of asbestos panelling. We then reconstructed the facility around the existing space frame and completed it with metal rainscreen cladding and a felt flat roof.

A full internal fit-out including installing fixtures and fittings and bespoke joinery shelving units was also carried out.

The second project at Harlington Library involved internal and external refurbishment, minor structural alterations and installation of enhanced security provisions. The fit out of the building included high quality joinery as well as new LED lighting and window blinds.

This logically challenging project was delivered effectively as a result of our flexible approach and commitment to working closely with the authority throughout.

Both projects were highly successful and secured construction award nominations. Oak Farm Library was recognised in the Best Public Service Building category , whilst Harlington Library was listed in the Best Educational Building category of the Local Authority Building Control’s Building Excellence Awards 2014.

Meeting the project completion date was critically important to this project as the facility needed to be open in time for the new school term. An objective we achieved.
