Gillmoss Materials recovery facility

Liverpool

The construction of this facility was part of the wider Merseyside Waste Recycling PFI project. VolkerFitzpatrick supported Veolia Environmental Services throughout the procurement process.

Following award of the contract in Spring 2009 we worked closely with Veolia Environmental Services and their technology provider, Ken Mills, to design and build a material recycling facility able to process 100,000t of dry mixed recyclables using the latest technologies in mechanical sorting.

The main aspects of the project were:

  • Remediation of contaminated land
  • External hard standing and drainage works including on site attenuation
  • Construction of the Material Recycling Facility building
  • Installation of building services
  • Installation of fire control systems
  • Construction of offices, welfare and education facilities

The Materials Recovery Facility building was designed to a very high standard and is expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. The design includes for the maximisation of natural daylight, rainwater harvesting, and the roof has been designed with triple wave to allow for the future installation of Photovoltaic panels.   The external walls of the facility are clad in FSC approved cedar wood.

VolkerFitzpatrick was awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme 2011 National Site Award for good re-use of materials on site and for showing sensitivity to the local community.
