As part of the East West Rail - Western Section Phase 2 programme, VolkerFitzpatrick has been contracted to construct Bletchley High Level station in preparation for the delivery of much-needed transport connections for communities between Oxford and Cambridge.

VolkerFitzpatrick will connect the existing station to the East West Rail line, once it is opened in 2024, by building a new link bridge to the existing platforms at Bletchley station and constructing two new high level platforms, which will connect the station to the Bletchley Flyover and take the total number of platforms from six to eight. In addition, it is proposed that two lifts and an underpass will also be constructed in order to provide access between platforms 7 and 8.

John Cox, VolkerFitzpatrick managing director - rail and infrastructure, said: “Our team is immensely proud to be undertaking these key upgrades, which will allow the station to be part of the new East West Rail line.

“With VolkerRail a partner in the East West Rail Alliance, and VolkerLaser and VolkerHighways already providing support and expertise in bridge removal and traffic management, this project – which is fundamental to connecting communities and families in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire – has allowed VolkerWessels UK to demonstrate its capabilities and reputation as a leading multidisciplinary contractor.

“Throughout the project, our teams aim to work with local companies as much as possible, and we have already presented at an Alliance Supply Chain Engagement event to start creating relationships with local businesses and our procurement team. We also hope to support employment opportunities in the area, and any available positions will be posted on our job portal.”

The work to upgrade the station will run through to spring 2022; constructed a safe distance away from the operational railway to ensure minimal disruption to train passengers.

Bletchley High Level Station will eventually be at the centre of the first direct rail service to connect communities between Oxford, Bedford and Cambridge in more than 50 years.

The project will bring people closer to the things that matter most including jobs, new homes and family; providing reliable, quick, environmentally sustainable journeys and more affordable travel
