The VolkerFitzpatrick project team at the Crossrail Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA) have been awarded the Quarterly Contractors Health, Safety, Environment and Security (HSE&S) Award from client Crossrail.

Crossrail's judging panel were impressed with the strong culture within VolkerFitzpatrick's supervision team; preventing duplication and confrontation, promoting a one team no blame approach to site safety.

The team, who are currently completing the academy building at Ilford in East London, were also praised for their commitment to embracing the Target Zero approach and their excellent compliance to reporting and KPI requirements.

TUCA will provide training for at least 3,500 people over the lifetime of the Crossrail project and has facilities including a spray concrete lining chamber, simulated TBM area, a narrow gauge rail and areas for carrying out underground construction techniques e.g. pipe-jacking and micro-tunnelling.

TUCA will be the only soft-ground tunnelling training facility in Europe.
