Launched in 1994, The Green Apple Environment Awards scheme is an annual international campaign which recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world.

Over 18 months, VolkerFitzpatrick has transformed the old Feltham marshalling yard, in South West London, into a new train depot for South Western Railway.

Throughout the project, innovation was key, with several new technologies being implemented across the project to save time and money, including solar technology, smart filtration and dust reduction technology.

The project also put several initiatives in place to reduce road movements, including bulk material deliveries, and the testing and retention of 12,750 tonnes of topsoil. This resulted in over 2,300 vehicle movements being taken off the local road network, and 108 tonnes of CO2e saved – the equivalent of planting 2,139 trees.

Providing benefits to the local community was also a fundamental part of this project’s success, with the team launching the company’s first community engagement app, providing support to several local charities and social enterprises, hosting school and community engagement events, and raising over £12,000 for the Children with Cancer UK charity.

Commenting on the award, Phil Wood, senior project manager said: “I’m extremely proud that our work at Feltham has been recognised by The Green Organisation. Throughout the project, we introduced new technology and initiatives to ensure our impact to the local environment and its community would be as minimal as possible. Wherever possible, we also found ways to improve the landscape and leave a legacy for VolkerFitzpatrick once we left site.”

The award ceremony will take place at The Palace of Westminster, on Monday 15 November, where the project team will be informed of the level of award it will be receiving – bronze, silver or gold.
