This scheme forms a key part of the council's vision for the future of Luton. It involved completing the town centre’s inner ring road and changing traffic circulation on the north side of the town centre.
The completion of the inner ring road will not only help reduce peak period congestion in and around the town centre but it will also improve access for pedestrians and cyclists. An area of land was also reclaimed to allow for the continued regeneration of Luton’s economy.
VolkerFitzpatrick completed a variety of works that included the construction of single and dual carriageway road sections, a rail over-bridge, retaining walls, four new traffic signal controlled junctions and associated utility diversions. The works also involved the installation of bus priority measures at key junctions, helping to improve bus reliability and journey times.
The new two-way single carriageway ‘Gateway Link’ road was built, running from the junction of Hucklesby Way and Old Bedford Road, to a new signal-controlled junction with Church Street and Hitchin Road. This section of the route runs between Midland Road and the railway line and passes under the station multi-storey car park. The route then continues into Crescent Road to another new signalled-controlled junction with Crawley Green Road.
The scheme also included the construction of a new road bridge over rail at Crawley Green Road, a shared cycle/pedestrian route and a new access road at the end of Midland Road onto Gillam Street.
