The annual event, delivered by Build UK in partnership with The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), sees contractors open live construction sites to the public, giving local communities and the next generation a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the wide variety of career opportunities available within the industry.

VolkerFitzpatrick will open four sites:

Network Rail are delivering the new Meridian Water Station on behalf of Enfield Borough Council, as part of London’s major ‘Meridian Water’ regeneration programme. The station is expected to accommodate up to 4 million passengers, over the next 20 years.

The Ely Southern Bypass will be a 1.7km single carriageway road, connecting the A142 at Angel Drove to Stuntney Causeway in Cambridgeshire.

Essoldo House is a design and build project to construct a new mixed-use building on London’s Kings Road. Fellow VolkerWessels UK business unit, VolkerGround Engineering, will be demonstrating their ground preparation works during the event.

Joint venture BMV (BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall, VolkerFitzpatrick) is undertaking key repair works to the M5 Oldbury Viaduct, between junctions 1 and 2 of the M5, for Highways England. VolkerWessels UK business unit VolkerLaser will also be demonstrating their work on site.

VolkerStevin will open three sites:

VBA, a joint venture comprising VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins (part of the SNC-Lavalin Group), is undertaking a project to design and construct a replacement Wave Reflection Wall at Morecambe seafront, on behalf of Lancaster City Council and the Environment Agency. Attendees will also get the chance to visit VolkerBrooks’ specialist facility where pre-cast concrete, formwork and steel fabrication is manufactured.

United Utilities is working in collaboration with C2V+, a Jacobs-CH2M and VolkerStevin joint venture, in delivering the Morecambe Catchment Strategy Project, which involves upgrade work to two sites - Schola Green Wastewater Pumping Station located in Morecambe and the Wastewater Treatment Works site located near Middleton. The two will be connected by a new 7km sewer pipe, to reduce the number of spills from the catchment into Morecambe Bay.

VolkerLaser:

In addition to their participation at Oldbury Viaduct, VolkerLaser will also open the M2 Stockbury Viaduct site. The project involves the replacement of bearings in the abutments and half joint of an 11 span bridge, carrying the M2 motorway over the Junction 5 slip roads, the A249 and Maidstone Road.

Alan Robertson, Chief Executive Officer of VolkerWessels UK, said: “We are delighted to be involved in Open Doors once again and particularly excited to be opening eight sites across the country this year. The event is a fantastic opportunity for the next generation to see the creativity, dedication and hard work that goes into constructing these local landmarks, and the fantastic career opportunities available.”

Suzannah Nichol, Chief Executive of Build UK, said: “Bookings are now open for Open Doors 2018, which Build UK is running in partnership with CITB for the third year in a row and is set to be another hugely successful event. It is a fantastic opportunity to have a closer look at some of the UK’s most exciting projects and experience what makes construction such a fantastic industry to be a part of.”
