The award was introduced to underpin and celebrate success in this vital aspect of the construction industry's design, delivery and management process. Throughout this project the VolkerFitzpatrick  team worked hard to maintain the highest health and safety standards. By implementing its ‘Incident and Injury Free' initiative and ‘Flywheel Safety Model', VolkerFitzpatrick's project teams completed 750,000 man hours safely, demonstrating continuous improvement and best practice. This was recognised through the achievement of 56 STARs and two consecutive Platinum Badger Awards through Network Rail's STAR awards scheme, which was established to recognise and reward worksites and compounds who achieve high levels of health, safety and environmental risk control.

Commenting on the BCI health and safety award, Toufic Machnouk from Network Rail said, "Safety is central to everything we do at Network Rail, and we absolutely do not compromise on it. That commitment was embraced by VolkerFitzpatrick at Reading Depot and is recognised by this prestigious award for health and safety. VolkerFitzpatrick's safety performance was truly exceptional and backed up by team behaviours that reflected their exemplary industry leading attitude."
