Two Green Apple Awards for VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail division

Recent

VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail division are celebrating this year, having achieved two Bronze Awards at the Green Apple Environmental Awards.

The two winning projects were Network Rail’s Romford Accessible Walkway and Cambridge North station, the latter of which also won a Green Apple Award last year.

A number of environmental achievements were made during both projects, including:

Romford Accessible Walkway

  • Avoiding 450 tonnes of aggregate being imported for temporary works, which would then have been disposed of
  • Avoiding 50 lorry movements
  • A total carbon saving of 7.7 tonnes CO2e
  • Minimal use of diesel plant on-site, through the use of track screw piles, installed using electric power
  • Social benefits of reduced emissions and noise, usually associated with heavy construction plant

Cambridge North station

  • Installation of one acoustic wall on the platforms adjacent to neighbouring properties and one willow acoustic fence
  • Solar panel cycle shelter with 1,000 spaces for various types of cycles and powered by solar PV panels
  • A bio-retention system and rain gardens, installed for drainage purposes
  • A landscaping design which includes a number of ecological benefits to encourage invertebrates and mitigate the habitat loss of the station works

Steve Bridgen, head of HSEQS for VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “It is wonderful to have been recognised with not one but two Green Apple Awards this year. We have put 80 per cent of our operational staff through in-house environmental training to date and this award is a recognition of their competence in this area. Congratulations to the project teams on this achievement.”

The awards were presented on 6 November, at a ceremony held in the Houses of Parliament.
