Staff completes London to Cambridge bike ride for charity

Recent

A team of nine cyclists, consisting of VolkerFitzpatrick, Network Rail and Atkins employees, completed the London to Cambridge bike ride on Sunday the 27th of July. The sponsored ride was in aid of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity and raised a total of £2500.

Starting from the Lea Valley Leisure Centre in London, the 60 mile cycle route took them through various villages and beautiful countryside. The event was well sponsored by local residents who were out clapping and cheering the riders along. Despite warm sunny weather conditions, the fitness levels of the cyclists were challenged by a strong head wind and steep inclines. Senior members of VolkerFitzpatrick also offered their full support throughout the event and encouraged the riders all the way to the end.

The team crossed the finish line in Cambridge to awaiting family members and were welcomed by some well-deserved food and drinks. Everyone completed the race in excellent times ranging from three and a half to five and a half hours, with the occasional stops for re-fuelling en route.

Allison Esqulant, office manager for VolkerFitzpatrick and one of the cyclists, commented: "I thoroughly enjoyed the cycle event; it was a great team effort from all the participants from Network Rail, Atkins and VolkerFitzpatrick. The team spirit was very high and the atmosphere was electric, with thousands of riders taking part on behalf of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. I am proud to be part of a team that raised a considerable amount of sponsorship for a very worth charity."
